Back to Victorian Times
Year 5
Last half term we studied the topic of The Victorians and lots of our work was based around this. We took a trip back in time in November to Beamish Museum where some children worked as maids and servants for the Squire, making cakes and candles.
Other children played the part of Victorian school children and had a lesson from a very strict Victorian teacher who practised handwriting and mathematics with them. We read the book ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty, the story of a young orphan fighting for survival on the streets of London. We all loved this novel and lots of written work and artwork came from it. We made and tasted gruel, it was awful, we were glad we didn’t live in the Victorian times!
We also put on a Christmas performance for the whole school and parents called Santa’s on Strike – we were nervous but it was brilliant!!
