We love learning about different cultures. We looked at the carved African animals and artefacts. “This one’s heavy and cold. It’s made of stone”. “The lion is made of wood. It’s got big, sharp teeth.”
A zebra has stripes, I’ve found a zebra!

We enjoy reading non-fiction and story books.
“Look, you have to get a plane to go to Africa.”

We can imagine what is like to live in an African village.

We moved to Colegate school in September 2007, and have settled into our new classroom!

We are looking forward to the outside patio area being resurfaced so we can get outside in all weathers.

This term we are enjoying dressing up as different characters; watch out for our stories, we’ll post them on this site as soon as they’re ready!

      Year 5

Last half term we studied the topic of The Victorians and lots of our work was based around this. We took a trip back in time in November to Beamish Museum where some children worked as maids and servants for the Squire, making cakes and candles.

Other children played the part of Victorian school children and had a lesson from a very strict Victorian teacher who practised handwriting and mathematics with them. We read the book ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty, the story of a young orphan fighting for survival on the streets of London. We all loved this novel and lots of written work and artwork came from it. We made and tasted gruel, it was awful, we were glad we didn’t live in the Victorian times!
We also put on a Christmas performance for the whole school and parents called Santa’s on Strike – we were nervous but it was brilliant!!

Year 4 is a hardworking group where enthusiasm and interest abound. Many of the activities undertaken are of a practical nature with visits both into and out of school featuring prominently
as part of the Y4 Colegate curriculum. We have visited two I.C.T. centres to improve our skills. We have used programmes such as Kartouche. A programme which allows the children to create their own playscripts complete with animation. Another visit to the Watermark I.C.T. facilities where the children used 'digicameras' to make ten minute videos featuring themselves as the stars of the production. History has given y4 the opportunity to travel to different places. such as Bowes museum and Bessie Surtees house on the Quayside. Both visits gave the children the chance to view at first hand artefacts of the Tudor period. The photograph you can see shows two of our pupils on a visit to the soup kitchen in Newcastle following the donation of a substantial amount of food from our school, The children were fascinated by what they saw and were delighted that their contributions were being put to such good use.

Children learn through many enjoyable activities such as using an interactive CD rom and singing French songs. This term we have been working with our friends from the Cedars School on international topics. We made egg fried rice and learned about China at their school. At Colegate we made an American picnic of pancakes and maple syrup and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Yum!
