Autumn 2007
In September, Year 6 visited Thomas Hepburn Comprehensive School for the whole day to improve our enterprise skills. In the morning we became duck manufacturers. We had to make and sell ducks to make as much profit as possible.
During the afternoon we were taught by the school staff, this helped us experience life at the Comprehensive school. It was great!!
We also spent a whole day at the C.L.C at Heworth Comprehensive School, consolidating our computer skills. The theme for the day was ’World War II’ and ‘Space’.
Life during the War Years
In October we visited the D.L.I Museum- Durham in connection with our History Topic ‘World War II’. Thankfully we travelled by modern coach not a rickety old bus.
We dressed up as servicemen and servicewomen, handled weapons ( really heavy and awkward) and experienced a session in an air raid shelter. We shopped with our minute rations and prepared menus for the week.
We handled many artefacts, toured the museum of memorabilia and climbed aboard an armoured truck and jeep.
We felt like soldiers setting out on duty. We had a super time and really feel we had an insight into life as it was then. Do you have any memories of world war two that you would like to share with us?
Later that day we visited the Art Gallery and became ‘artists’ for the afternoon, drawing and colouring our favourite pictures. We discussed the effects of different colours and shades. We were intrigued by the artists craft and variety of subject matter. This has inspired us to organize a visit to the Laing Art Gallery . Don't forget to check out the art work that we produce!
Look after your eyes
Year 6 attended a talk and practical demonstration given by a blind ex-serviceman from St. Dunstan Charity. We were made aware of difficulties facing blind and partially sighted people.
It was fascinating to find out how people cope with such a disability. We role played a street scene so that we would realise the difficulties faced by people with sensory deprivation.
Science is Fun!
A science club for Year 5/6 flourished weekly in November/ December 2007. The club was organised by Thomas Hepburn Comprehensive School and held at Colegate every Thursday evening. Each session developed investigative skills among our eager young scientists. We were swamped with parachutes, sailing crafts and terrifying structures! It was great to have an excuse to be messy and gluey!
We are all receiving young scientist of the year awards to acknowledge our participation and enthusiasm.
In Year 6 we are developing our Sports skills further and becoming healthier individuals. Already we have enjoyed sessions in football and basketball, as well as weekly visits to Felling swimming baths.
